Day Seventeen, May 7, 2015

Fayetteville, AR to Tulsa OK....
Oddly enough to get to Tulsa from Fayetteville we chose to take a short excursion to Independence, KS.  More about why we did this later in this post.  We cut across a corner of MO which gave us 21 states we have passed through.  Shortly after entering MO we turned left, caught the only portion of old Route 66 that passes through the southeast corner of KS which is the shortest distance that Route 66 takes through any of the 9 states it passes.

Appropriately, at the KS state line we encountered a herd of buffalo which was an inspiration for us and our home state song.
Yes, just to fit in with the KS stereotype we encountered a herd of about 50 buffalo.

It may seem odd that enroute to Tulsa we chose to go through Independence, KS.  Here's the backstory.
Tom's parents, Margaret Adams Frye and Kenneth Frye were from Independence and this is the site of the Frye family graves.  I knew that at one point in my paternal grandmother's, Margaret Cliff Grove, childhood her father took a job with the Portland Cement Company and they left Ontario, Canada to live a short time in Independence.

Kenneth Minor Pickard (Frye)
After researching the 1910 census we were able to determine where Tom's grandmother lived and where my grandmother lived.  After researching Google Maps we were able to go to both addresses in Independence.  To our surprise, in 1910 Tom's grandmother and my grandmother lived only 4 blocks apart!!!  The home of  John & Sarah Cliff  is no longer standing.
Independence was the home of playwright William Inge, Alf Landon, Vivian Vance, Bill Kurtis.

Tulsa here we come.  Tulsa is our first big city since leaving New Orleans, the best part about this is overnighting with cousins Ed & Annette Carreon Poston.

La mejor comida mexicana en cualquier lugar
In my quest for the best Mexican food ANYWHERE I have found it and the culinary artist is right in my own family!!  Annette prepared the most delicious carne asada, Mexican Rice, beans, salsa, flour and corn tortillas, chicken verde (thanks to daughter Andrea!!!) with beer, wine and other bebidas.  The trouble is now I have a new standard for all Mexican chefs to attain.

We left Tulsa after a breakfast of biscuits, some kind of egg quiche also made by Andrea.  Our lunch bag was packed by Annette that we are still eating from.  AND...Ed and Annette presented us with a selfie stick!!!!  Top   photo is our 1st experiment with a selfie stick.

OK followers we need more page views........We are entering our 2nd panhandle state(after FL), Texas, soon and we want some BIG TEXAS sized page views.
